Medication
There are many different medications for the relief of mental illness symptoms which are sometimes taken in combination to tackle more than one symptom.
Medications can be categorised according to their function:
* antipsychotics, to relieve symptoms of psychosis
* antidepressants, to relieve symptoms of depression
* mood stabilisers, to moderate extreme mood changes
* benzodiazepines, for the relief of anxiety
Within each category of medication, there are a number of different types of drugs, and they in turn will be available under different brands. Hopefully, your doctor or psychiatrist will support you in finding the one that works best for you.
Side effects
Whilst a medication may relieve your symptoms quite successfully, they are often associated with side effects and it is helpful for you to be aware of this before you begin the treatment.
These are among the most common side effects experienced whilst taking medication, though these do not apply to all types:
* Sedation or drowsiness
* Movement disorders
* Heart problems
* Sexual problems
* Weight gain
* Digestive problems and nausea
* Confusion and memory loss
* Liver failure
* Fatigue
Weight gain is a particularly difficult side effect to manage, because it can affect an individual's general health. There is also a significant association between anti-psychotic medication and diabetes, which means that your physical health should be checked regularly.
